Hours: Temporary part time position; 21 hrs inc evenings and weekends

Location: SPYF Molendinar Community Centre, Blackhill, Glasgow

Reports to: SPYF Community Centre Manager

Salary: £13.00

 

About the Organisation

St Paul’s Youth Forum aims to alleviate the worst effects of poverty in the Blackhill/ Provanmill area of Glasgow through our programmes focusing on Eating, Education, Exercise and Empowerment. We are part of the People Make Glasgow Communities, working in partnership with the City Council and Glasgow Life to reopen our local Community Centre.

Purpose of the Role

The post holder will support the centre manager with the day to day running of the SPYF Molendinar Centre and will be responsible for supervising the team in the absence of the centre manager, administration tasks, updating and responding to social media posts, community engagement work, running sessions for community members, meeting and greeting visitors to the Centre, setting up rooms for meetings/functions, setting up the sports hall for activities/bookings and responding to general enquiries. There is also an element of housekeeping/cleaning required. Some of the work will be desk based and involves using a PC and telephone. 

The post holder is key to ensuring the relationships between all centre users and occupants are maintained and are positive. A major part of this role is to support the activities work, by leading in areas of specialisation, from primary school clubs, to groups supporting people with disabilities and the elderly. The post holder will supervise the team and tasks as well as being responsible for engaging the wider community of the surrounding area to make the centre’s offer relevant and attractive to the community it serves. 

The centre will be open from 8:30am – 8:00pm Monday – Wednesday, 8:30am- 9pm Thursday, Friday and 8:30am- 6pm Saturday. In the future there may be changes to the opening hours and we may open on a Sunday. 

Working closely with staff, Trustees, local authorities, funders and external commercial organisations, the SPYF Molendinar Supervisor will ensure that a welcoming learning space operates for the benefit of, not only young people and local residents, but people throughout Glasgow

Thanks to funding from Glasgow City Council’s Communities and Place Fund, this post is funded for the next 10 months with a view to extend this subject to further funding/revenue generation. 

 

Key Responsibilities

Main aspects of the role will involve: 

  • Providing an on-site presence throughout the week, during a rota of opening hours, working no more than 5 days per week.

  • Welcoming and supporting service users of SPYF Molendinar Community Centre & Cafe.

  • Running activities for members of the community as part of skills that you bring to the role.

  • Opening and closing the building and following all security procedures. 

  • Being a nominated keyholder and point of contact for security & fire alerts. 

  • Conducting weekly fire alarm and emergency light tests and maintaining inspection logs. 

  • Carrying out emergency procedures in the event of a fire, flood, break-in, accident or major damage.

  • Monitoring condition of equipment (inc. fire extinguishers)

  • Maintaining the upkeep and improvement of the exterior and interior of the premises (inc. emptying bins, recycling, litter picking, inspecting, and clearing drains, etc.) 

  • Directing contractors and workmen to repair or maintenance jobs, and inspecting their work afterwards 

  • Basic cleaning duties when needed (e.g. during absences of the Cleaning Operative) 

  • Making and serving hot and cold drinks within the community cafe, using a cash register & cashing up takings 

  • Maintaining and adhering to all health and safety guidelines 

  • Completion of relevant paperwork

  • Effectively communicate and build working relationships with Centre users, staff, volunteers, and trustees 

  • Undertake relevant training when necessary.

  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the status of the post as directed by the SPYF Community Centre Manager.
